Into the Spin of Things

posted Tuesday, 26 August 2008

Since it's been rainy the past couple days and it looks like it may continue raining for a few more, I decided to dig out some wool and start spinning again.  So far I've got about a bobbin's worth spun of Maggie's wool (she's a dark brown/black color) and it is gorgeous.  My plans are to spin the whole fleece, ply it and knit a sweater for Jim.  It's the perfect color for Jim, so I may implore one of my more knit savvy cousins (Judy) to do the actual knitting.

I've had a few problems with the boys "helping" me.  Xander managed to unwind the bobbin once and Beckett popped the driveband, screwed up the brake band AND unwound the bobbin once as well.  I finally had to have a "come to Jesus" meeting with both of them and so far they have steered clear of my wheel.  We'll see how long that lasts.

I've been using my old Louet instead of my preferred Kromski Symphony simply because the Louet was in the living room and the Kromski was up in the guest room... laziness prevails!  Well it's not all laziness, as the Symphony needs a new driveband and I'm fresh out of twine to make one.  Ah well... something to remember to buy next time I'm out.

M and I have been planning to dye some wool (possibly Fiona's?) to do some felted Christmas ornaments.  Yes I know it's only August, but I have to make the mental decision to do something long before it's actually done!!  It's a really neat process using cookie cutters and felting needles to make the shape, and the embroidering the details on later.  For the Kyrgyz peeps out there, it's very similar to the wool mobiles available at Tsum and BETA.  Anyway, it seems like a good project.

I am excited to see the felted ornaments. I am embarassed to admit that I have never seen a real spinning wheel.

Ivy- That's ok... I think you have to move in the sheep community to view them as commonplace ;) I have 2, a very modern looking Louet (think IKEA-style) and an absolutely fabulous Eastern European looking Kromski (think Sleeping Beauty). The Kromski (which Sophie dubbed 'Rora) is very much a work of art and I've only kept it squirrelled away in the guest room to keep the boys from damaging it (well that and the whole driveband issue). I''ll try to post pics of them sometime.
